Children's Musical Theatre Workshop
15 - 20 June 2020
Laurel Olsen - Denison Community Schools
This fun-filled week is designed to teach the basics of musical theatre to kids in grades K-8 who love singing, dancing and challenges.
The workshop runs from June 15-20, 2020, and concludes with a performance
on Saturday, June 20. All events will take place at the Denison High School, 819 North 16th Street in Denison, Iowa. This year's
production is the popular musical, The AristoCats KIDS.
Since its meager beginning in 2004, this popular workshop has
developed a strong tradition of educational fun for all involved. This
year's workshop will be under the direction of Laurel Olsen, a language arts
instructor at Denison Community High School. She has produced/directed
plays and musicals in Denison for the past 16 years includig the
community musicals Annie, Shrek, and The Wizard of Oz.
She has also taught dance, judged speech and theatre competitions, and
served as technical director and choreographer for past Children's
Musical Theatre Workshops sponsored by the Donna Reed Foundation.
Even local grandparents have discovered a wonderful benefit.
They can spend a week of quality time with their grandchildren by
inviting them for a visit and enrolling them in the workshop.
Update: 21 May 2020 -
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Donna Reed Foundation has
made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Children's Musical
Theatre Workshop for health and safety reasons of the students, families,
volunteers, staff, and audiences. "We are disappointed that we will not be bringing this popular theatre experience to the community this summer but we are looking forward to offering an exciting adventure next year,"
said Pat Fleshner of the Donna Reed Foundation.
This will be our first year without a workshop since its creation.
The 2020 summer production of Disney's The AristoCats KIDS will be
held over for next year's program.
